Coordination through price signals, exchange, and competition between self-interested actors.

Extended definition

The M form is the third coordination layer in the TIME framework. It emerges when exchange between strangers becomes frequent enough to require a coordination mechanism that operates without kinship (T) or formal authority (I). Its operating logic is price: the signal that aggregates distributed information about supply, demand, and relative value into a single number that coordinates allocation decisions across vast distances and among actors who have no other relationship.

The M form produced the institutions that define the conventional Economy: the firm, the bank, the stock exchange, the commodity market, the free trade agreement, the central bank, and the global economic system that connects them. Each coordinates through price signals, competition, and the legal infrastructure of contract, property, and fiduciary obligation.

The M form’s contribution is allocative efficiency at scale: it can coordinate production, distribution, and consumption across the planet without central planning. Its limitation is what price signals cannot see. Ecological function, unpaid care, cultural inheritance, community capacity, and the health of the substrate on which production depends: none of these register in the price mechanism until they have been destroyed enough to generate a cost or enclosed enough to generate a revenue. The M form optimises for throughput (value measured by what moves) and is structurally blind to retention (value measured by what stays).

Benjamin Life identifies the two institutional expressions of the M form that drive extraction as the Two Machines: debt-based money (which requires growth to service interest) and the shareholder corporation (which requires extraction to service fiduciary duty). These are not incidental features. They are the M form’s operating architecture at maturity.

Coordination node

The M-form coordination node is the skyscraper, the stock exchange, the trading floor: architecture built to concentrate and accelerate flow. The shift from cathedral (I) to skyscraper (M) is a shift from encoded authority to concentrated capital. The node’s verticality is a statement about what the coordination form values: height as competitive display, floor space as tradeable asset, location as proximity to the flow of money.

Position in the BioStack

The M form maps structurally to the conventional Economy as a whole. The four layers of that system (Firm, Municipality, Nation-state, Global Economy) are the M form’s institutional architecture at ascending scales. Each optimises for throughput. Each abstracts from place. Each treats the biosphere as an externality.

The BioConomy is the +E replacement for this architecture. The Economy versus BioConomy analysis identifies the five axes on which the two systems diverge: what gets measured, who owns what, what counts as the unit, how money enters, and what the relationship to the substrate is. On each axis, the M-form answer produces throughput; the +E answer produces retention.

Contrast with adjacent forms

The I form coordinates through hierarchy; the M form coordinates through price. The M form’s contribution is decentralising allocation decisions that I-form bureaucracy handles badly. Two strangers can exchange through price signals without belonging to the same group or answering to the same hierarchy.

The M form coordinates through competition; the E form coordinates through pooled commitment. The transition from T+I+M to T+I+M+E adds a coordination mechanism that operates through voluntary, commitment-based cooperation toward outcomes no single actor can produce alone. The Alpha Window names the temporal constraint on this transition: the interval within which +E architectures must achieve structural viability before the M form’s substrate degradation and digital enclosure close the remaining options.
