The smallest unit of productive activity in the conventional Economy. A company or firm is a site of production defined by ownership and legal incorporation, organized to generate financial return for its shareholders.

Extended definition

The company is to the conventional economy what the BioPlace is to the BioConomy: the ground-level unit where economic activity touches a specific place. The difference is the organizing principle.

  • A BioPlace is defined by the living system it belongs to and the human relationship to that system.
  • A company is defined by title deed and corporate charter.
  • The land a company occupies is an input; the land a BioPlace occupies is the productive asset itself.

In the TIME framework, the shareholder corporation is the characteristic institutional product of the M form. It coordinates through price signals, competition, and the fiduciary obligation to maximize return. Benjamin Life identifies this as one of the Two Machines: the ownership form structurally requires extraction from labor, supply chain, and ecological base regardless of participant intent.

The transition to +E coordination does not reform the company. It substitutes a different form at the same scale. The federated cooperative replaces shareholder ownership with mutual vesting. Where the company extracts value from place and exports it to shareholders, the cooperative retains value in the community that produced it. The shift is structural, rather than moral: cooperative logic produces retention because the ownership form requires it, the same way shareholder logic produces extraction because its ownership form requires it.

Contrast with BioPlace

A compnay abstracts from place. A multinational can move production to wherever costs are lowest because the ownership form has no structural relationship to any specific landscape. A BioPlace cannot move. It is the specific ground, worked by the specific community, according to the rhythms of the specific living system. The company optimizes for throughput; the BioPlace optimizes for regeneration.
