More broadly, the full set of relationships, exchanges, and commitments that a bioregional coordination body makes visible and operational for its participants and peers.
Extended definition
The term carries two nested meanings. In its narrow, technical sense, a coordination surface is the specific page every BioHub wiki publishes at a predictable path (coordination-surface.md), carrying structured frontmatter (offers, seeks, shared instruments, contact protocols) that any peer BioHub or AI agent can read without parsing prose. In its broader sense, the coordination surface is the entire operational interface a BioHub presents: the goods and services its participants produce and exchange, the commitment pools they participate in, the ecological and coordination outcomes they deliver, and the instruments through which those outcomes become legible to the wider economy.
The narrow meaning serves machine-readable discovery. The broad meaning captures the full scope of what coordination looks like at the bioregional scale.
Relationship to stigmergy
The coordination surface is the +E form’s answer to the coordination problem that the +M form solves through price signals and the +I form solves through hierarchy. Where a price aggregates information into a number and a bureaucracy aggregates it into a rule, the coordination surface publishes a structured trace in a shared medium. The mechanism is stigmergic: participants respond to what peers have published rather than to commands from above or prices from a market. A BioHub coordinator reads a peer’s coordination surface and knows what alignment is available without prior arrangement, a standing meeting, or a price negotiation.
The essay How the BioConomy Coordinates develops this point at length: the BioConomy declines to reproduce assembly governance at the inter-BioHub layer because the substrate (the network of published coordination surfaces) carries the coordination the assembly would otherwise carry.
What a coordination surface contains
At the wiki level, every coordination surface publishes four structured lists.
Offers. What the BioHub can provide to peer BioHubs, to the communities within its bioregion, and to external counterparties, typically in the +I and +M domains. These range from verified ecological services (tenderable services) through shared vocabulary and templates to practical capabilities like food production, monitoring infrastructure, and cooperative supply chains.
Seeks. What the BioHub needs from peers, from institutional counterparties, or from participants it has not yet reached. Seeks are the coordination surface’s demand signal: they publish the gaps the BioHub cannot fill alone.
Shared instruments. The classes of financial instrument the BioHub is aligning its services against: watershed bonds, biodiversity credits, corporate stewardship funds, Mycelial Patronage architectures. Shared instruments are where two BioHubs discover they are targeting different tranches or service lines within the same instrument class, creating natural grounds for federation.
Contact protocols. How to reach the BioHub for coordination, contribution, or inquiry.
At the operational level, the coordination surface extends beyond the wiki page to include the full range of exchanges and relationships the BioHub sustains. A soup kitchen that accepts bioregional currency for meals is part of the coordination surface. A stewardship team earning that currency by clearing invasive vegetation is part of the coordination surface. A performance bond that settles when the watershed delivers measurable outcomes is part of the coordination surface. The wiki page makes these relationships discoverable. The relationships themselves are the surface.
Why the term matters
The conventional economy does not need a coordination surface because it has price. Price compresses all relevant information about supply and demand into a single number, and the institutional apparatus of the +M form (exchanges, clearing houses, courts, regulatory bodies) ensures that the number is actionable. The +E form operates in a domain where price cannot reach: ecological function, community capacity, cultural coherence, and watershed health. These are not priceable goods. They are outcomes produced by sustained, place-based coordination among committed actors. The coordination surface is the instrument that makes those outcomes and those commitments legible without reducing them to price.
A BioHub without a coordination surface is a community organization. A BioHub with a coordination surface is a node in a network that can federate, align to instruments, discover peers, and scale through replication rather than through growth. The surface is what converts local coordination into inter-bioregional coordination without requiring a central authority to mediate the connection.
