The way humans have coordinated their activities has evolved over time through four fundamental forms: Tribes (T), Institutions (I), Markets (M), and Networks (N).
Each coordination form, as it matures, produces a characteristic physical structure. The structure compresses the form’s invisible coordination logic into something visible, built, and capable of producing awe in the people who encounter it. The pattern holds across all four TIME forms, and the structural rhymes between them are strong enough to be predictive.
Overview
The thesis can be stated simply: if you know what a coordination form optimizes for, you can predict what its mature physical expression will look like, what it will compress into a single legibility signal, what risks that compression creates, and what it will externalize onto the substrate the next form inherits.
| T (Tribal) | +I (Institutional) | +M (Market) | +E (Emergent) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Optimizes for | Belonging | Legitimacy | Efficiency | Reciprocity at watershed scale |
| Concentrating node | Sacred site | Cathedral, palace, capitol | Skyscraper, trading floor | BioHub (currently forming) |
| Legibility signal | Clan mark, totem, scarification | Crown, seal, coat of arms | Stock index | BioScore |
| Portable symbol | Body paint, tattoo, crest | Uniform, flag, seal on document | Brand logo | Does not yet exist |
| Decoupling risk | Mark worn without underlying kinship | Monument outlasts the authority it embodies | Index rises while productive capacity hollows out | Score rises while underlying ecology is static or declining |
| Externalized cost | None (first form; no prior substrate) | Commons the institution was carved from | Labor, community cohesion, biosphere | None below it to receive the cost |
The Sacred Site (T form)
The Tribal coordination form organizes through kinship, loyalty, and belonging. Its physical expression is the sacred site: a place where, in Mircea Eliade’s terms, the sacred breaks into profane space and consecrates a fixed point around which community life organizes.
The examples span cultures and geographies. Uluru rises 348 meters above the Australian central desert, higher than the Eiffel Tower, carrying over 40 sacred sites and 11 Dreaming trails along a single formation. Songlines are sung pathways that encode creation stories, ecological knowledge, navigation, and law; one route runs roughly 3,500 kilometers from the central desert to the eastern coast. Polynesian marae are open-air ceremonial platforms found across the Pacific; the Taputapuatea marae on Raiatea, a UNESCO World Heritage site, marks the point where the world of the living intersects the world of ancestors and gods. The Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove in Nigeria contains forty shrines and nine worship points along the river Osun, described by UNESCO as a symbol of identity for all Yoruba people and the wider diaspora. A century ago every Yoruba town had such a grove. Most have vanished.
What produces the awe is the felt contact between planes of existence: the sense that at this site, ancestral or creative power remains present and accessible. The ritual performed at the site activates it. Marae identity derives from the ceremonies performed on the platform. Egungun masquerades manifest ancestral spirits through masked performance in the lineage compound. Songline sites are activated by singing the correct verse. It is the combination of place and practice, and neither works alone.
The legibility signal is the totem, the clan mark, the scarification pattern. Yoruba facial scarification encoded lineage: patterns of one, three, or four stripes etched symmetrically into each cheek allowed observers to discern subethnic origin at a glance. The portable symbol is the mark carried on the body (body paint, tattoo, crest) that signals membership anywhere.
The decoupling risk: the mark can be worn without the underlying kinship or obligation. Imitation, appropriation, hollow display.
The T form is the oldest coordination form. It emerged first, with the symbolic revolution of language and early writing. There was no prior coordination form collapsing beneath it. And the T form persists inside everything that came after. Christian Bromberger’s 1995 fieldwork in Marseille, Naples, and Turin analyzed football supporter culture as a society constructed on pseudo-kinship, with the stadium as ritual space, the jersey as clan mark, the anthem as ritual song, face paint as body marking, and a pre-match fast recalling the fast before communion. The tribal form is never left behind. It runs underneath.
The Cathedral (+I form)
The institutional coordination form organizes through legitimacy, authority, and hierarchy. Its physical expression is the cathedral: a new form encoding a new coordination logic, built during and after the collapse of the Western Roman Empire’s administrative order.
The cathedral emerged gradually. After Rome fell, church-building revived under monasticism, producing the Romanesque style (round arches, thick walls, small windows). The Gothic breakthrough came at Abbot Suger’s abbey church of Saint-Denis, dedicated in 1144, which introduced the luminous stained glass and soaring height that contemporaries had never seen. The style spread in a construction boom across the next century and a half: Sens, Noyon, Senlis, Laon, Notre-Dame de Paris, Chartres (rebuilt from 1194), Reims, Amiens, Beauvais. Robert Scott’s The Gothic Enterprise records that every bishop felt compelled to outdo his peers, with height as the primary competitive dimension.
For a 12th-century peasant, the cathedral was by an enormous margin the tallest, largest, brightest structure in the lived environment. Chartres was built on a hill; its builders worked to lighten the walls so that strong rays of light shone directly into the nave, with light understood as the expression of the Divine, and the building meant to evoke the celestial Jerusalem. The stained-glass windows were glass Bibles, teaching the illiterate the full scriptural sequence from creation through judgment. Georges Duby’s The Age of the Cathedrals traces the Gothic impulse to the striving of 11th-century monks and scholars to grasp the concealed order of the universe.
The cathedral compressed the entire civilizational claim of the institutional order into stone, glass, and acoustic space. The legibility signal is the crown, the seal, the coat of arms: a single emblem compressing legitimate authority. The portable symbol is the uniform, the flag, the seal carried on the document.
The decoupling risk: the monument can outlast the authority it embodies. Versailles is now a museum, not a mandate.
The emergence context is critical. The cathedral arose during and after the collapse of Roman coordination infrastructure. The institutional form did not renovate the prior order. It encoded a new coordination logic in a new physical form that carried authority the collapsing system could no longer provide. This is the pattern that recurs.
The Skyscraper and the Index (+M form)
The market coordination form organizes through price, exchange, and competition. Its physical expression is the skyscraper and the trading floor, with the stock index as its legibility signal.
The physical lineage runs from medieval market towns and guild halls through the early-modern bourses to the industrial skyscraper. The Antwerp Bourse (1531) is widely considered the first purpose-built commodity exchange; its galleried form became the model for London’s Royal Exchange, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam. After Antwerp fell in 1585, Amsterdam replaced it, and the Dutch East India Company pioneered continuous trading in joint-stock shares.
The skyscraper is the market form’s equivalent of the cathedral: competition encoded in vertical scale. Carol Willis’s Form Follows Finance argues that skyscraper form is driven by land values, zoning, and speculative real-estate cycles. The tallest-building record migrated from New York (Woolworth Building, 1913; Empire State Building, 1931, tallest for nearly 40 years) to Chicago (Sears Tower, 1973) to Asia and the Gulf (Petronas Towers 1998, Taipei 101 in 2004, Burj Khalifa in 2010), with later record-holders promoted by governments to advertise their cities on the global market stage.
The trading floor was the operational node. Open outcry, conducted in pits through shouting and hand signals, dominated commodity and securities trading for over 150 years. The Chicago Board of Trade standardized the practice from 1848. The sensory intensity was total. A CME veteran described the opening bell to the Futures Industry Association: the hum building as people arrived, then pandemonium breaking loose when the grain markets opened. It was often a multigenerational family business.
The legibility signal is the stock index. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, first calculated on May 26, 1896, compresses an enormously complex economic reality into a single number. A large drop signals that most listed companies moved in the same direction. The index makes an entire economy legible at a glance. The portable symbol is the brand logo: the Nike Swoosh, designed in 1971 for $35, compressing everything a corporation stands for into a mark recognizable in a fraction of a second.
The decoupling risk is now in visible crisis. Stock indices are increasingly understood as distortion: the Dow’s price-weighting means Goldman Sachs outweighs the far larger Apple, and the index can rise while productive capacity hollows out. The physical nodes are failing. CME Group permanently closed its Chicago trading pits in 2021, ending 173 years of open-outcry history. The London Stock Exchange ended open outcry in 2007. NYMEX ended it in 2016. Trading migrated to electronic systems that require no physical gathering. The US national office vacancy rate hit a record 19.6% in the fourth quarter of 2023. About 20% of Manhattan’s 463 million square feet of office space stood empty in 2024. Chinese megacity towers were barely half-full.
The market form’s nodes are emptying. Its legibility signal is decoupling from the reality it claims to represent. The structural parallel to the late-Roman order is visible to anyone looking for it.
The BioHub (+E form)
The Emergent coordination form organizes through reciprocity, commons stewardship, and pooled commitments at the scale of the watershed or bioregion. Its physical expression is the bioregional hub: a place-anchored coordination point that organizes activity around a defined living system.
Concentrating nodes include Joe Brewer and Penny Heiple’s Design School for Regenerating Earth (organized around bioregions and a network of learning exchanges), Regenerate Cascadia (founded 2023, now supporting 10 landscape groups with 43 landscape stewards and an online community of over 600 individuals from more than 150 organizations), and the growing set of BioHubs documented in the Metabolic assessment. The Cascadia bioregion is defined by watersheds rather than political borders, stretching more than 2,500 kilometers along the Pacific Rim.
The hypothesis is that the E form’s awe is produced by the visible recovery of a living system: a degraded watershed regenerating, a species count climbing, a community feeding itself from its own soil. The bioregional literature supports this framing. The E form has not yet produced a singular awe-inducing structure comparable to the cathedral or the skyscraper. That absence is honest evidence of the form’s immaturity, and it is not a gap to be papered over.
The legibility signal is still forming. The Guardians of Earth BioScore is one candidate: a composite index built from five sub-scores (species diversity, monitoring quantity, data quality, community engagement, and restoration evidence) that compresses the ecological and social health of a defined place into a single trackable number. Structurally, it stands in the same relationship to the E form that the Dow stands in to the M form. Whether it matures into that role is an open question.
The portable symbol does not yet exist. Cascadia has a flag and a passport. Salmon Nation uses “nature state” language. There is no single globally legible mark compressing the E form’s coordination logic the way the Swoosh compresses corporate identity or the crown compresses sovereignty. This absence is structurally significant. It dates the E form to a pre-monumental stage, analogous to Christianity before Saint-Denis or capitalism before Antwerp.
The decoupling risk mirrors the stock index precisely. Three of the BioScore’s five components (monitoring, data quality, community engagement) measure attention to the living system, and not the system’s health. A Realm could raise its score by intensifying observation and community activity even if the ecology beneath it is static or declining. The platform’s own comparative-baseline design and continual reformulation attempt to guard against this, but the risk is structural and inherent to any composite legibility signal. If a future BioScore audit shows scores rising while independent ecological indicators (canopy cover, indicator-species populations) fall, the parallel is confirmed. This is a falsifiable prediction, and naming it publicly is part of the intellectual honesty the E form requires of its practitioners.
The structural pattern
Across all four forms, the same architecture recurs. Each produces a concentrating node (sacred site, cathedral, skyscraper, bioregional hub), a distillation object that compresses its coordination logic into visible form, a single-number legibility signal (clan mark, crown, stock index, BioScore), a portable symbol that carries affiliation beyond the site, and a decoupling risk where the signal detaches from the reality it claims to represent.
Each form emerges during the collapse of its predecessor’s coordination infrastructure. The cathedral arose as Roman administration failed. The bourse arose as the institutional order’s economic monopoly weakened. The bioregional hub is arising as the market form’s physical nodes empty and its legibility signals decouple.
And each form externalizes costs onto the substrate the next form inherits. The farm externalized onto soil and water. The stock market externalized onto labor and biosphere. The data center externalizes onto energy and local hydrological budgets. The BioHub inherits the accumulated debt of all three, and there is no substrate below it to receive the costs. That is the structural reason BioHub communities hold economic value that the market now needs. The debt that must be repaid is what makes the coordination bankable.
A note on evidentiary status
The first three columns of this analysis (T, +I, +M) rest on documented facts and established academic scholarship. The fourth column (+E) is speculative by design. The Guardians of Earth BioScore, the Cascadia bioregion, the Design School for Regenerating Earth, and the Metabolic-documented BioHub field are real initiatives with documented activity. The structural argument (that they stand in the same relationship to the collapsing market order that the cathedral stood in to the collapsing Roman order) is an inference, and not an established conclusion. Independent peer-reviewed scholarship analyzing bioregional hubs as coordination-form manifestations does not yet exist. The +E column is persuasive because it rhymes with three well-documented predecessors, and it should be read with that honest qualification in view.
