Each of the four TIME coordination forms produces a characteristic physical structure that compresses its invisible coordination logic into visible, awe-inducing form: the sacred site for T, the cathedral for +I, the skyscraper and index for +M, and the emerging bioregional hub with its BioScore for +N and the as-yet nascent E-form.
Overview
The TIME framework describes coordination forms as invisible relational patterns. Each form’s mature physical manifestation is a compression of that pattern into built structure that makes the invisible visible. The sacred site compresses the tribal web of kinship into a place where the sacred touches the ordinary. The cathedral compresses ecclesiastical hierarchy into a stone claim on the sky. The skyscraper and stock index compress market competition into vertical scale and a single moving number. The bioregional hub with its BioScore compresses network coordination into a place-based digital layer.
The pattern holds structurally across all four columns: each form generates a concentrating node, a distillation object, a single-number legibility signal, and a portable symbol. Each carries a decoupling risk where the signal detaches from the reality it claims to represent. The +N form is genuinely emergent and speculative; it stands in the same structural relationship to the collapsing +M form that the cathedral stood in to the collapsing late-Roman order.
This framework is a structural extension of Ronfeldt’s original TIMN work. Ronfeldt himself has not made these specific claims about physical manifestations; the mapping of physical structures to coordination logics is an interpretive move, and it is presented as such.
T (Tribes): the sacred site
Coordination logic. Kinship, loyalty, and belonging, organized through extended families, clans, and lineage systems.
Characteristic node. The sacred site: a place where, in Mircea Eliade’s terms, the sacred irrupts into profane space. Uluru rises 348 meters above the surrounding plain, dotted with over 40 sacred sites and 11 Tjukurpa (Dreaming) trails; songlines encode creation stories, ecological knowledge, navigation, and law across pathways up to 3,500 kilometers long. The Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove in Nigeria contains forty shrines, sculptures, five sacred places, and nine worship points along the river Osun; UNESCO notes it as “a symbol of identity for all Yoruba people” and the diaspora. Polynesian marae function as intersection points between the world of the living (Te Ao) and the world of ancestors and gods (Te Po).
Distillation object. The consecrated site plus the ritual performed there. Marae identity derives from the investiture and reunion ceremonies performed on the platform; Egungun ancestral presence is enacted through masked performance in the compound; songline sites are activated by singing the correct verse. The combination of site and ritual is what carries the coordination logic.
Legibility signal. The totem or clan mark. Yoruba facial scarification (ìlà) encoded lineage: patterns of one, three, or four stripes etched symmetrically into each cheek allowed observers to discern subethnic origins at a glance (three parallel lines for the Oyo subgroup, a different configuration for the Egba).
Portable symbol. Body paint, tattoo, scarification, clan totem, family crest. Markings carried on the body that signal membership anywhere.
Decoupling risk. The mark can be worn without the underlying kinship or obligation. Imitation, appropriation, and hollow display are the failure modes.
Modern residue. Sports fandom persists as T-form coordination inside later forms. Christian Bromberger’s 1995 study of football supporters in Marseille, Naples, and Turin analyzes the stadium as ritual space, describes supporter culture as pseudo-kinship, and identifies fixed pre-match, match, and post-match rhythms including a pre-match fast recalling the fast before communion. The jersey functions as clan mark, the anthem as ritual song, face paint as body marking.
+I (Institutions): the cathedral
Coordination logic. Legitimacy, authority, and hierarchy, exemplified by the army, the Catholic Church, and the bureaucratic state.
Characteristic node. The cathedral. This is the critical angle: the cathedral was a new physical form encoding a new coordination logic, not a renovation of Roman temples. The cathedralis originated as the church of the bishop, whose powers increased steadily as civic (Roman) authorities declined after the fourth century. The mature Gothic form emerged much later, at Abbot Suger’s abbey church of Saint-Denis (dedicated 1144), which introduced the luminous stained glass and height that contemporaries had never seen. From Saint-Denis, the Gothic style spread across Europe in a construction boom running from the mid-12th to early-14th centuries.
Distillation object. The cathedral as encoded theology in stone and glass. Georges Duby’s The Age of the Cathedrals traces Gothic to the striving of 11th-century monks and scholars to grasp the concealed order of the universe. The stained-glass windows of Chartres were literally glass Bibles, teaching the illiterate the whole scriptural sequence from creation through judgment. Robert Scott notes that what propelled and sustained the cathedrals was the realization by bishops, abbots, and kings that the Gothic cathedral was a powerful theological and political symbol, understood as such by builders and patrons.
Legibility signal. The crown, seal, coat of arms, and flag of state: a single emblem compressing legitimate authority.
Portable symbol. The uniform, the seal, the flag carried on the person or the document.
Decoupling risk. The monument can outlast the authority it embodies, becoming a museum rather than a mandate. Versailles now serves as a monument more than a mandate.
+M (Markets): the skyscraper and the stock index
Coordination logic. Competitive exchange, price, and efficiency, symbolized by merchants and traders responding to supply and demand.
Characteristic node. The skyscraper as the +M equivalent of the cathedral, plus the trading floor as the operational node. Carol Willis’s Form Follows Finance argues that skyscraper form is driven by land values, zoning, and speculative real-estate cycles: “vernaculars of capitalism.” The tallest-building record migrated from New York (Empire State, 1931, 1,454 feet, tallest for nearly 40 years) to Chicago (Sears/Willis Tower, 1973) to Asia and the Gulf (Petronas 1998, Taipei 101 in 2004, Burj Khalifa at 828 meters in 2009-2010), with later record-holders promoted by governments to advertise their cities.
Distillation object. The trading floor at its peak. Open outcry, conducted in pits via shouting and hand signals, dominated for over 150 years. The Chicago Board of Trade (1848) standardized the practice. A CME veteran recalled to the Futures Industry Association: “As people came in, it was like the hum started to build and then when that bell went off and the grain markets opened, pandemonium just broke loose.”
Legibility signal. The stock index. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, first calculated 26 May 1896 by Charles Dow with 12 stocks (now 30), compresses an enormously complex economic reality into a single number. The Dow is price-weighted, meaning a stock’s price rather than company size determines its weight, a known distortion (Goldman Sachs outweighs the far larger Apple). The S&P 500 (market-cap weighted) is now regarded as the chief US benchmark.
Portable symbol. The brand logo. The Nike Swoosh, designed by Carolyn Davidson in 1971 for a $35 fee, functions as a portable mark compressing corporate identity. Apple’s mark works the same way. Logos compress everything a company stands for into a single repeatable visual recognized in a fraction of a second.
Decoupling risk (in visible crisis). This is the key +M angle. Stock indices are increasingly understood as distortion rather than distillation. The physical nodes are in visible crisis. Open outcry has largely collapsed: CME Group announced on 4 May 2021 the permanent closure of its Chicago pits (shuttered since March 2020), pits whose history stretched back 173 years. The London Stock Exchange ended open outcry in 2007 (last pit closed 2010); NYMEX ended it in 2016. The tallest buildings are partially vacant: the US national office vacancy rate hit a record 19.6 percent in Q4 2023 (Moody’s Analytics), surpassing prior records of 19.3 percent in 1986 and 1991; approximately 20 percent of Manhattan’s 463 million square feet of office space stood empty in April 2024; Chinese megacity towers stood barely half-full in 2024.
+N (Networks): the bioregional hub and the BioScore (emergent / speculative)
Coordination logic. Reciprocity, commons, and stewardship, found in the web-like ties among NGOs and civil-society actors, and in bioregional regeneration.
Characteristic node. The BioHub. Concentrating nodes include Joe Brewer’s Design School for Regenerating Earth (organized around bioregions and a planetary network of learning exchanges), Regenerate Cascadia (founded April 2023, now six staff supporting 10 landscape groups with 43 landscape stewards and an online community of over 600 individuals from over 150 organizations), Salmon Nation, and the 152 initiatives documented in Metabolic’s 2026 BioHub Assessment. The Cascadia bioregion is defined by watersheds rather than political borders, stretching more than 2,500 kilometers along the Pacific Rim.
Distillation object. The hypothesis: +N awe is produced not by a single monumental structure but by the visible recovery of a living system. A degraded watershed regenerating. A species count climbing. A community feeding itself from its own soil. The bioregional literature supports this framing (organizing at the scale of watersheds so that every person can walk out their front door and act) but does not yet document a singular awe-inducing structure. The +N distillation object is a living system rather than a built monument.
Legibility signal. The BioScore, the composite metric on the Guardians of Earth platform. The BioScore sums five sub-scores: species diversity, monitoring score (data quantity), BioValue (data quality, scored by expert peer review), community score (community engagement), and evidence score (evidence of restoration, weighted through Song Tokens toward local people with stronger connections to place). Data is benchmarked against surrounding areas 5x and 12.5x the size of the realm. Structurally, the BioScore is the +N analog of the stock index: a single composite number compressing an enormously complex underlying reality into a figure that can be tracked, ranked, and competed over.
Portable symbol. The +N portable-symbol equivalent does not yet clearly exist. Cascadia has a flag and passport, and Salmon Nation uses “nature state” language, but there is no single globally-legible mark compressing the +N logic the way the Swoosh compresses corporate identity or the crown compresses sovereignty. The absence is structurally significant: it suggests the +N form is genuinely immature, at a stage analogous to early Christianity before the cathedral or early capitalism before the bourse.
Decoupling risk. Can the BioScore rise while underlying ecology degrades? Structurally, yes, and the risk mirrors stock-index decoupling almost exactly. The BioScore rewards monitoring quantity, data quality, and community engagement (three of five components) alongside actual species diversity and restoration evidence. A Realm could raise its score by intensifying observation and community activity (more observers, more uploads, more expert-verified data, more Song Tokens) even if the living system itself is static or declining, just as a stock index can rise while productive capacity hollows out. The platform’s comparative-baseline design and continual reformulation are attempts to guard against this, but the risk is inherent to any composite legibility signal.

The +N column as structural inheritance
The +N claim is speculative by design and is persuasive precisely because it rhymes with three well-documented predecessors. The bioregional hub stands in the same structural relationship to the collapsing +M form that the cathedral stood in relation to the collapsing late-Roman order. The bioregional literature is explicit that it is organizing “during and after the rest of the collapse into which we’ve all been born” and positions bioregionalism as a viable alternative to capitalism and the nation-state. The +M nodes visibly failing (empty trading floors, vacant towers, indices read as distortion) are the collapse against which +N defines itself.
The absence of a mature +N portable symbol is the strongest single indicator of the form’s immaturity. Cascadia’s flag is the closest current approximation, but it functions as a bioregional identity marker rather than as a globally-legible compression of coordination logic. When the +N form matures, its portable symbol will emerge; the fact that it has not yet done so is one measure of where the transition currently stands.
