Mycelial Coordination is the operating pattern of the Emergent (E) form: decentralized, bioregional, adaptive coordination organized around whole-system health rather than around competition or extraction.

Overview

The Tribes Institutions Markets Networks model identifies four forms of societal coordination that emerged in sequence. Ronfeldt’s own recent writing has questioned whether “Network” is the right name for the fourth form, and has opened the possibility that a genuinely new fifth form is now emerging. Michel Bauwens has quoted the framing directly: “We have excellent nodes. We don’t yet have the mycelial network between them.”

Mycelial Coordination is the proposed name for the fifth form. The TIME framework used across this wiki renames Ronfeldt’s fourth form as Emergent to make the same point in a different vocabulary. The two framings converge on the same content: a coordination form that operates at bioregional scale, holds multiple actors in productive relationship without central command, distributes intelligence through the network rather than concentrating it at nodes, and organizes around the health of the whole system it is embedded in.

The biological analogy

The name comes from the ecology of fungal mycelial networks. In a mature forest, the mycelial layer connects trees across species boundaries. Nutrients, water, and information move through the network according to local need. A tree in low light or drought stress receives what it needs from trees with surplus, via the fungal partners it shares. There is no central regulator. The system distributes resources through the properties of the connections themselves.

Suzanne Simard’s work on the wood-wide web documented the pattern empirically. Merlin Sheldrake’s Entangled Life provides the accessible synthesis. The analogy does not claim that human coordination systems will look like fungal networks in any literal sense. It claims that a coordination form organized by the health of the substrate, distributing resources according to local need, without a central allocator, is biologically possible and observably functional at scales far exceeding what any individual node could coordinate alone.

Distinguishing features

Mycelial Coordination is distinguished from the prior TIMN forms by seven observable features:

Bioregional scale. The unit of coordination is the bioregion (typically a watershed system), not the sector, the corporation, or the nation-state.

Substrate orientation. The system optimizes for the health of the living substrate on which all economic activity depends, not for the maximization of any single output.

Distributed intelligence. Coordination knowledge lives across the network rather than concentrating in a central regulator or algorithm.

Reciprocity as base logic. Exchange operates on reciprocity and mutual obligation rather than on price alone, without excluding priced exchange where it fits.

Portable code, no load-bearing central node. The coordination code (governance, currency, accounting) can propagate to a new bioregion without reference to a headquarters, and the removal of any single node (including the founding node) does not collapse the system.

Legibility through composite indicators. The system is made legible through composite metrics (like BioScore) that measure substrate health, not through single flow metrics like GDP.

Constellational governance. No single institution holds the whole; a constellation of institutions each holds a part, with governance separated across economic, rights, and cultural spheres.

Relationship to the E form

The TIME framework and the Mycelial Coordination framework describe the same emerging coordination form from two angles. The TIME framework retains Ronfeldt’s structural sequence and renames the fourth form for the community context. The Mycelial Coordination framework describes the operating pattern of the E form when it functions well.

The BioHub is the institutional expression of Mycelial Coordination at bioregional scale. Its Learning Hub is the pedagogical expression. The commitment pool is the value-exchange expression. The Bioregional Financing Facility is the financial-institutional expression. Each of these is a component of a Mycelial Coordination system operating in a specific bioregion.

Empirical basis

The Mycelial Coordination framework is a working hypothesis. It is grounded in three lines of evidence:

Biological precedent. Fungal mycelial networks, mature forest ecosystems, and the endosymbiotic biology described in Mycelial Consciousness demonstrate that the pattern is biologically possible and functionally superior in complex, resource-constrained environments.

Practitioner convergence. Bauwens’s Archipelago of Regenerative Projects, Ruddick’s commitment pooling in East Africa, Life’s bioregional economics discipline, Brewer’s Design School for Regenerating Earth, and the 152-initiative BioHub field documented in Metabolic’s May 2026 assessment are all operating under coordination logics that overlap heavily with the seven features above. The convergence is unplanned, which is one of the properties the framework itself predicts: when a coordination form is genuinely emerging, multiple nodes arrive at the same pattern without central direction.

Independent theoretical arrival. Michel Bauwens (P2P Foundation), Sacha Pignot (fractal sovereignty), Benjamin Life (bioregional commoning), Michael Haupt (TIME renaming and Mycelial Coordination), and Thais Corral (SINAL BioHub) have all arrived at the same three-layer nested structure (BioHub inside BioRegion inside BioConomy) from different intellectual starting points. Bauwens has cited this convergence explicitly in his 16 August 2026 P4P essay.
