Greek-American evolutionary biologist and futurist (January 23, 1936 - December 1, 2024) whose work extends Lynn Margulis’s endosymbiotic biology into a general principle of civilizational maturation: that mature ecosystems, and by extension mature societies, are characterized by mutual aid and cooperative negotiation rather than by hostile competition.

Sahtouris’s central thesis is that the trajectory of biological evolution moves from hostile competition (young ecosystems, newly disturbed, resource-rich, low-diversity) to cooperative negotiation (mature ecosystems, complex, resource-constrained, high-diversity). The claim is grounded in ecology and not sentiment: cooperation is structurally more capable than competition in complex, resource-constrained environments, which is what mature ecosystems demonstrate.
Applied to human civilization, the argument is that the competitive, extractive logic that drove the steep ascent of the twelve-thousand-year S-curve cannot navigate the deceleration phase now underway. It is the wrong operating system for the conditions emerging. This is the biological grounding for the Transcendence trajectory in the Emancipation Architecture and for the Mycelial Consciousness framework more broadly.
Sahtouris held a post-doctoral fellowship at the American Museum of Natural History and taught at MIT and the University of Massachusetts. She contributed to the NOVA-Horizon TV series and was a fellow of the World Business Academy with an honorary Chair in Living Economies, advisor to Ethical Markets, and a Professor of Business at Chaminade University in Honolulu. Her audiences included the World Bank, United Nations, Boeing, Siemens, Hewlett-Packard, South African Rand Bank, Caux Round Table, Tokyo International Forum, and the governments of Australia, New Zealand, and the Netherlands.
She was a co-founder of the Worldwide Indigenous Science Network and convened international symposia on Foundations of Global Sciences in Hokkaido, Japan and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She popularized the Butterfly Transformations story and the Keyboard of Science concept.
