The S-Curve Thesis is the analytical claim that every historical retention-economics figure worked during the steep acceleration phase of the industrial S-curve, or at its approach, and that this timing determined their fate: retention succeeded when it coincided with a nation’s own catch-up industrialization and failed where it challenged the throughput order’s access to peripheral resources.

Overview

The thesis performs one primary analytical operation. It takes the retention lineage documented by peer-reviewed economic history (Chang, Reinert, Polanyi) and maps each figure onto the growth curve of industrial civilization. The map yields three observations that would be hard to see without it.

First, the figures whose ideas were implemented at scale (Clay, Carey, Lincoln, Bismarck’s Germany) were all operating during the steep acceleration phase of their own nation’s industrial curve. Retention was implementable precisely because it aligned with a growth phase that could reward domestic industrialization.

Second, the figures whose ideas were rejected, delayed, or reversed (Hamilton at the base of the American curve, List at the base of the German curve, Mattei and Mosaddegh and Sankara in the periphery of the post-war global curve) were operating either too early or in the wrong location relative to the dominant order. The growth curve itself selected for throughput globally, and retention succeeded only in the specific pockets where a nation’s catch-up interest aligned with the mechanism.

Third, and most consequential for the present, if the industrial curve is now entering deceleration, the frameworks that were structurally premature during the acceleration phase are becoming structurally necessary. This is the sharp, testable prediction the thesis puts on the record.

The mapping

The figures fall into four groups by their S-curve position.

Base of national curve, ideas premature

Alexander Hamilton (1791). United States industrial S-curve barely started. Tariff recommendations adopted in 1792; subsidy recommendations rejected. Described by historians as a quarter century ahead of his time.

Friedrich List (1841 theory, died 1846). German industrial curve pre-Bismarck. Died impoverished by suicide, a generation before the framework was vindicated.

Steep acceleration, ideas implemented

Henry Clay (1816 to 1850). American System (tariffs, national bank, internal improvements) enacted through the antebellum tariff wall despite Nullification-Crisis opposition.

Henry Carey (1851 to 1865). Advised Lincoln and Treasury Secretary Chase; helped shape the Morrill Tariff of 1861. United States manufacturing became the largest in the world by 1900.

Abraham Lincoln (1861 to 1865). The most coherent retention program in United States history. Assassinated 1865; program continued for a generation.

Bismarck’s Germany (from 1879). Iron and rye tariff protected strategic industries. German industrial output second in the world by 1900; population grew from 41 million (1871) to nearly 70 million (1913).

Post-war periphery, ideas reversed

Enrico Mattei (1945 to 1962). ENI, domestic gas, the Mattei Formula. Killed 1962; 2003 Pavia investigation concluded criminal sabotage.

Mohammad Mosaddegh (1951 to 1953). Nationalized the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company. Overthrown August 1953 by Operation Ajax; CIA officially acknowledged the coup in August 2013.

Thomas Sankara (1983 to 1987). Food self-sufficiency, mass vaccination, literacy, debt repudiation, tree-planting. Assassinated October 1987 by a coup led by Blaise Compaoré. April 2022 Burkinabè military tribunal convicted Compaoré (in absentia) and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

At or after the global inflection

Ibrahim Traoré (2022 to present). Sahel resource nationalism, new mining code, nationalization of the Boungou and Wahgnion mines, ECOWAS exit. Explicitly framed as reviving Sankara’s project. Early and reversible; outcomes unverified.

Sergei Glazyev (2012 to present). De-dollarization, Eurasian integration, commodity-backed settlement architecture. Transmission point where the retention lineage re-enters state policy at a major-power scale.

The three claims the mapping supports

One. Retention succeeded when the local S-curve position and the mechanism aligned. Hamilton was too early; Lincoln was on time; Sankara was in the wrong location relative to the throughput order.

Two. The mechanism of failure in the periphery cases was reversal, not persuasion. Coups (Iran 1953, Burkina Faso 1987), suspicious deaths (Italy 1962), and structural adjustment (developing world 1980s and 1990s) were the mechanisms by which retention was defeated. The historical record excludes ideological refutation as an explanation.

Three. If the deceleration indicators (see Deceleration Indicators) are read correctly, the same mechanisms that removed Mattei and Mosaddegh and Sankara should be less effective now, because the gradient of the global curve has shifted. Whether that prediction holds is testable against the Sahel wave and against the durability of industrial policy in the United States and the European Union over the next two to three years.

Guardrails on the thesis

The mapping is an original Structural Inference. It is not established fact. Its main risks are three: contamination by conspiracy framing (the deaths of Mattei, Mosaddegh, Sankara, and Lincoln each had specific documented causes, and the thesis rests on the pattern of reversal across cases rather than on any single unified explanation); confusion of correlation with causation (attributing United States or German industrial growth specifically to tariffs, rather than to geography, resources, immigration, and institutions, is contested Academic Inference and treated as contested throughout); and the inherently unfalsifiable nature of forward-looking claims about when the inflection has passed.

The thesis is offered as an interpretive frame that makes better sense of the pattern than the throughput-history alternative, not as a proof. The falsification test is explicit: track the Sahel wave and the industrial-policy durability over 24 to 36 months.
