Coordination is a property of substrate. Durable civilizational reform requires a portable operating code embedded in a substrate that survives the founder, not intensified effort from the founder or their institution alone.
The hypothesis is grounded in the historical record: after the Western Roman collapse, reconstruction did not happen through improved values or spontaneous reorganization; it happened through explicit, replicable operating systems (the Rule of St Benedict, standardized Carolingian minuscule, the Admonitio generalis of 789). Where a portable governance code existed, the architecture survived the withdrawal of its founding patron. Where it did not, it dissolved with the patron.
For the Emancipation Architecture, the substrate hypothesis is the design principle that distinguishes Mycelial Patronage from philanthropy: the patron’s capital does not fund a project, it enters the substrate and becomes the substrate.
