Value creation is consciousness-dependent. Steiner’s V2 (the application of human intelligence to human labor) is not a fixed process but a function of the consciousness that performs it, transforming structurally as consciousness evolves from Material to Mycelial.
Overview
This is the central original thesis of the BioConomy corpus, and it is the subject of Movement II of the Emancipation Architecture. The claim bridges Rudolf Steiner’s economic theory (1922) with the consciousness evolution scholarship of Gebser, Graves, Kegan, and Cook-Greuter, grounded in five independent literatures that converge on the same structural conclusion.
Every civilization rests on an implicit theory of value: an unexamined agreement about what counts as wealth, how it is created, and who may claim it. The theory governing the current system holds that value is created by applying increasingly sophisticated intelligence to human labor, producing gains measured in output per unit of effort. This theory is not wrong. It is incomplete. It describes value creation under one form of consciousness, Material, and mistakes that description for a universal law.
Steiner’s Two Value-Creating Processes
In 1922, Steiner identified exactly two processes by which economic value is created:
V1: Nature transformed by Labor. The irreducible encounter between human effort and natural substance. The farmer working soil, the miner extracting ore.
V2: Labor transformed by Spirit. When human intelligence (Geist) organizes, divides, and directs labor, a qualitatively different kind of value emerges. The inventor designing a machine, the organizer dividing tasks, the entrepreneur perceiving a possibility that raw labor alone could never produce.
Steiner was emphatic: these are the only two value-creating processes. Financial speculation, rent extraction, and interest on money create nothing. They redistribute what V1 and V2 have already produced.
V2 progressively displaces V1. Each application of intelligence to labor reduces the quantity of labor needed per unit of output. Under a properly organized social order, this displacement should produce human freedom. Under the actually existing order, it produces dispossession. The productivity-pay gap (documented by Bivens and Mishel at the Economic Policy Institute, confirmed by OECD data across 24 countries) is the empirical signature of this structural capture.
The Transformation
The BioConomy thesis extends Steiner’s framework across the developmental stages of consciousness:
Under Material Consciousness, V2 operates as the application of individual intelligence to commodified labor, producing productivity gains that are captured as private capital.
Under Mycelial Consciousness, V2 undergoes a structural transformation. It becomes the application of distributed intelligence to ecological participation, producing regenerative capacity that circulates as relational wealth.

The Five Domains of Evidence
The thesis draws on five independent literatures:
Steiner’s economic theory provides the foundational V1/V2 distinction and the observation that V2’s gains should produce freedom but are instead captured as capital.
Distributed intelligence research (Simard’s mycorrhizal networks, Ostrom’s polycentric commons, Hong and Page’s diversity prediction theorem) demonstrates that networked, distributed systems consistently outperform centralized, concentrated systems in complex adaptive environments.
Complementary currency design (Gesell’s demurrage theory, the Worgl experiment, Ruddick’s Sarafu Network) provides empirical evidence that monetary architecture determines what kind of value gets created.
Consciousness evolution scholarship (Gebser, Graves, Kegan, Cook-Greuter) establishes that different stages of consciousness produce qualitatively different relationships to production, value, and exchange.
The displacement problem (productivity-pay gap, failure of Keynes’s 15-hour work week prediction, Polanyi’s commodification thesis) demonstrates that V2 operating under Material Consciousness cannot produce the freedom Steiner identified as its proper outcome, not because of policy failure but because of architectural constraint.
The Farmer-Forger-Founder-Framer Sequence
The progressive abstraction of production maps directly onto V2’s transformation. The Farmer applies Labor to Nature (V1). The Forger applies individual Intelligence to Labor (Material V2). The Founder applies individual Intelligence to systems of production (late-stage Material V2). The Framer applies consciousness to consciousness itself, creating the conditions under which distributed intelligence can emerge (Mycelial V2).
This is why the Framer’s domain of production is consciousness. Without the Framer, communities default to Material V2 (concentrated intelligence, captured gains) even when they intend to operate differently.
AI as the Terminal Expression of Material V2
Artificial intelligence represents V2’s structural endpoint under Material Consciousness. If V2 is the application of intelligence to labor, and that intelligence can now be automated, then intelligence itself is commodified and the displacement of labor extends from physical to cognitive work. The pattern is identical to every previous round: the gains are captured as capital, not distributed as freedom. The scope is total. This makes the consciousness question urgent rather than theoretical.
Epistemic Status
The component claims are established by peer-reviewed evidence from each domain. The convergence across all five into a single structural conclusion (V2 is consciousness-dependent) is the corpus’s original synthesis. Steiner describes V2 within the Material epoch; the extension of his framework across consciousness stages bridges between literatures that do not themselves make the connection explicit.
