Structures of consciousness are the qualitatively distinct modes of awareness through which human beings perceive and organize their relationship to each other, to living systems, and to the conditions of their own existence. The BioConomy corpus draws on four independent developmental traditions that converge on the same structural claim: consciousness evolves through identifiable stages, and each stage produces fundamentally different economic logics.
Overview
The BioConomy thesis depends on a specific claim about consciousness: that different stages of development produce not merely different opinions or values, but different relationships to production, value, and exchange. If this claim holds, then economic transformation cannot be achieved by policy reform alone. The binding constraint is the development of a form of consciousness adequate to the emerging conditions.
Four developmental traditions, working from different methodologies and different evidence bases, arrive at structurally parallel conclusions. Their convergence is one of the central evidentiary pillars of the corpus.
The Four Traditions
Jean Gebser: Structures of Consciousness
Gebser identifies five structures of consciousness, each characterized by qualitatively different relationships to space, time, and causality:
Archaic. Undifferentiated consciousness. No separation between self, group, or world. Corresponds to the earliest human condition.
Magical. Consciousness is embedded in the group and in nature. The world is experienced as interpenetrated by human intention. Space is “point-like” (no distance), time is “timeless” (no sequence). Coordination operates through kinship, totem, and ritual.
Mythical. Consciousness achieves narrative structure. The capacity to organize experience through story, symbol, and cosmological framework. Space becomes “enclosed” (the temple, the city), time becomes “cyclical” (the liturgical year, the mythic return). Coordination operates through hierarchy, priesthood, and shared cosmology.
Mental-Rational. Consciousness achieves perspective. The capacity to stand outside, to analyze, to abstract. Space becomes “measurable” (Cartesian geometry), time becomes “linear” (progress, history). This is the structure that produces science, individual rights, market economics, and the progressive commodification of the world. Gebser names this the “perspectival” structure, and identifies its late phase as “deficient rational,” the condition in which the mental structure’s own achievements turn against it.
Integral. Consciousness achieves “aperspectival” awareness: the capacity to hold multiple perspectives simultaneously without being captured by any single one. Space and time become “diaphanous” (transparent, co-present). This is not a rejection of the mental-rational but an integration that includes and transcends it.
Gebser’s mental-rational structure corresponds to what the BioConomy corpus calls Material Consciousness. His integral structure corresponds to Mycelial Consciousness.
Clare Graves: Levels of Existence
Graves’s empirical research, conducted over twenty years through studies of adult value systems, documents an emergent, cyclical pattern of human development. Value systems evolve through identifiable levels, each producing different orientations toward survival, power, order, achievement, community, and systems thinking.
Graves’s most consequential structural observation is the distinction between First Tier and Second Tier thinking. First Tier levels (A-N through F-S in his notation, corresponding to Beige through Green in the Spiral Dynamics color scheme) are each characterized by the conviction that their worldview is the correct one. They compete with and reject other levels. Second Tier (G-T, Yellow in Spiral Dynamics) is the first level that recognizes the legitimacy and partial truth of all previous levels.
This threshold, which Graves called the Momentous Leap, is the developmental equivalent of the BioConomy’s Material-to-Mycelial transition. It is “the most difficult, but at the same time the most exciting transition the human race has faced to date.” The leap is from deficiency motivation to growth motivation, from getting to giving, from destroying to constructing.
Robert Kegan: Orders of Consciousness
Kegan documents five orders of consciousness, with each transition producing qualitatively different capacities for complexity, perspective-taking, and holding paradox:
Second Order (Imperial Mind). The subject is embedded in their own needs and interests. Others are experienced as means to the subject’s ends.
Third Order (Socialized Mind). The subject is embedded in their relationships and social roles. Identity is constituted by external expectations. This is the developmental capacity required for institutional coordination.
Fourth Order (Self-Authoring Mind). The subject can stand outside their socialization and construct an independent framework of meaning. This is the developmental capacity required for Material V2: individual intelligence applied to systems. The entrepreneur, the systems architect, the institutional reformer.
Fifth Order (Self-Transforming Mind). The subject can stand outside their own self-authored framework, recognizing it as one construction among many. The capacity to participate in distributed intelligence without needing to control it. This corresponds to the capacity for Mycelial V2 and maps onto Graves’s Second Tier.
Kegan’s research demonstrates that the demands of modern institutional life already exceed the developmental capacity of most adults. The BioConomy’s argument extends this: the demands of the emerging civilizational conditions exceed the capacity of the fourth order. The fifth order, which Kegan finds empirically rare, is the consciousness that Mycelial coordination requires.
Susanne Cook-Greuter: Empirical Distribution
Cook-Greuter’s sentence completion studies provide the empirical ground for the developmental claims. Her data documents the distribution of adult developmental stages in professional populations:
Later stages, corresponding to what the BioConomy thesis calls Mycelial Consciousness, represent a small but measurable portion of the population. These later stages are characterized by increased comfort with ambiguity, paradox, and systems-level thinking. Boiral, Baron, and Gunnlaugson’s 2014 study in the Journal of Business Ethics provides empirical evidence that later developmental stages correlate with more effective environmental leadership, suggesting that the capacity for ecological stewardship is developmentally dependent.
The Convergence
These four traditions work from different methodologies (phenomenological analysis, empirical value-system research, constructive-developmental interviews, sentence completion testing) and arrive at structurally parallel conclusions:
- Consciousness develops through identifiable stages that are qualitatively, not merely quantitatively, different.
- Each stage produces different relationships to production, value, exchange, and coordination.
- A threshold exists between the stages adequate to modern institutional life and the stages adequate to the emerging conditions.
- The later stages are characterized by the capacity for systems thinking, perspective-holding, and participation in distributed intelligence.
The BioConomy corpus maps this convergence onto the Major Evolutionary Transitions sequence and argues that the current civilizational threshold requires a specific developmental shift: from the perspectival, analytical, individually oriented consciousness that produced Material coordination to the aperspectival, relational, distributed consciousness required for Mycelial coordination.
Epistemic Status
The individual developmental frameworks are documented through peer-reviewed research (Graves in the Journal of Humanistic Psychology, Cook-Greuter in Industrial and Commercial Training, Boiral et al. in the Journal of Business Ethics). Gebser’s work is foundational phenomenology, widely cited in consciousness studies. Kegan’s constructive-developmental framework is a cornerstone of adult development research.
