The Farmer-Forger-Founder-Framer sequence maps the progressive abstraction of production across the Major Evolutionary Transitions, from the application of labor to nature through the application of consciousness to consciousness itself.
Overview
This is one of the central original contributions of the BioConomy corpus. The sequence tracks how the domain of production has become progressively more abstract across civilizational history, and identifies a fourth archetype, the Framer, whose domain of production is consciousness itself. The sequence maps directly onto the transformation of Steiner’s V2 (the application of human intelligence to human labor) as it moves from Material to Mycelial expression.
The Four Archetypes
The Farmer
Applies labor to nature. This is V1, the primary value-creating act. The irreducible encounter between human effort and natural substance. The farmer working soil, the miner extracting ore, the forester harvesting timber. Without this encounter there is no economic life at all.
The Farmer’s domain of production is the physical world. The mode of coordination is direct relationship with land and seasons. The characteristic MET stage is Mimetic and Magical, the earliest forms of human coordination.
The Forger
Applies individual intelligence to labor. This is Material V2 in its early form: the artisan, the inventor, the engineer. The Forger perceives that labor can be organized, divided, and directed to produce more than raw effort alone could achieve.
The Forger’s domain of production is technique. The mode of coordination is craft knowledge, apprenticeship, and the guild. The characteristic MET stages are Mythic and early Material. Steiner’s observation that “the forming of Capital is always a concomitant of the division, that is to say, the qualitative, organic division, of Labour” describes the Forger’s structural role.
The Founder
Applies individual intelligence to systems of production. This is late-stage Material V2: the entrepreneur, the systems architect, the institutional builder. The Founder does not merely apply intelligence to labor but creates the organizational structures within which labor and intelligence interact at scale.
The Founder’s domain of production is the system. The mode of coordination is the firm, the market, and the institution. The characteristic MET stage is mature Material. The entire venture capital and startup ecosystem operates within the Founder paradigm.
The Framer
Applies consciousness to consciousness itself. This is Mycelial V2. The Framer does not produce a product. The Framer produces a pattern of connection that enables a network to learn faster than any individual node.
The Framer’s domain of production is consciousness. The mode of coordination is the interpretive framework, the worldview. The characteristic MET stage is Mycelial. The Framer creates the conditions under which distributed intelligence can emerge, which is why their domain of production is consciousness itself.
Without the Framer, communities default to Material V2 (concentrated intelligence, captured gains) even when they intend to operate differently. The Framer’s function is what the BioConomy corpus calls threshold guidance: helping people develop the interpretive frameworks adequate to see what is ending and what is emerging, simultaneously, without collapsing one into the other.
