Ecologist trained in biology, tropical ecology and agriculture at the University of Amsterdam and the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Willem Ferwerda led IUCN Netherlands as executive director from 2000 to 2012, developed the 4 Returns framework for landscape restoration from 2012, and founded Commonland in 2013, serving as its CEO until May 2024. He is an executive fellow at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University.

Contribution

The 4 Returns framework holds that a restored landscape should yield a return of inspiration, a social return, a natural return and a financial return within one generation, planned across natural, combined and economic zones over twenty years. Commonland applies it with landscape partnerships in more than 20 countries, and the shared vision of 1000 Landscapes for 1 Billion People, a coalition Commonland co-founded, adopts the same four returns. At IUCN Netherlands he set up ecosystem grant programs on wetlands, rainforests and grasslands in more than 40 countries.

For the wiki, the framework is the main statement within integrated landscape management of what a landscape’s value consists of, and a point of comparison for the BioConomy’s own account of regenerative value.
