The rate at which material, energy, or information moves through a system per unit of time. A physical and engineering measure: barrels per day through a pipeline, packets per second through a network, tons per hour through a mill, patients per week through a clinic. Throughput describes flow across a boundary. It says nothing about what the flow builds, degrades, or leaves behind.

The concept is neutral on its own. A watershed has throughput. A forest has throughput. A body has throughput. The question in each case is what proportion of the flow is retained as living structure (biomass, soil, tissue, capacity) and what proportion passes through as loss or waste. Healthy living systems calibrate throughput to what the system can absorb, transform, and regenerate. Unbounded throughput in a bounded system degrades the substrate that made throughput possible.

Throughput Economics is a specific application of this general measure: an economic framework that treats throughput itself as the primary indicator of health, measuring value by what moves rather than by what stays.
