Jonathan Rowson is a Scottish philosopher and chess grandmaster. He co-founded the London research institute Perspectiva with Tomas Björkman in 2016 and is its chief executive. He was previously director of the Social Brain Centre at the RSA, and was British chess champion in 2004, 2005 and 2006 [IC].

Contribution

Rowson’s essays are the wiki’s main English-language source on Bildung. Bildung in the 21st Century (2019), written for the Centre for the Understanding of Sustainable Prosperity at Tim Jackson’s invitation, argues that “the complexity of the world is overwhelming the complexity of our minds,” and that a post-growth economy depends on new ways of knowing. His essay for Perspectiva’s first Realisation Festival (2021) renders Bildung in English as “Realisation,” traces it to Comenius and the Third Earl of Shaftesbury, and recounts the lineage the wiki sets out on Aesthetic Education. Perspectiva’s work centers on what it calls the meta-crisis, and on the inner and cultural capacities needed to respond to it.
