Lead author of The Limits to Growth (1972) and Thinking in Systems: A Primer, and author of the influential article “Leverage Points: Places to Intervene in a System.” Meadows developed the leverage points framework for intervening in complex systems and the “Dancing with Systems” principles for working within them.

Meadows’s Limits to Growth, commissioned by the Club of Rome, used system dynamics modeling to demonstrate that exponential growth in population and industrial output would overshoot planetary carrying capacity within a century. The study’s core finding has held up across multiple thirty-year updates. Its significance for the BioConomy is that it gave the Logistic Growth Principle its first computational expression at civilizational scale.
Her leverage points framework ranks twelve places to intervene in a system by effectiveness, from the least powerful (adjusting parameters like subsidies and taxes) to the most powerful (changing the paradigm out of which the system arises). The framework is foundational to the BioConomy’s approach to systemic transformation: working at the level of paradigm and purpose rather than at the level of parameters and buffers.
In “Dancing with Systems,” Meadows articulated fourteen principles for working within complex systems:
- Get the beat.
- Listen to the wisdom of the system.
- Expose your mental models to the open air.
- Stay humble. Stay a learner.
- Honor and protect information.
- Locate responsibility in the system.
- Make feedback policies for feedback systems.
- Pay attention to what is important, not just what is quantifiable.
- Go for the good of the whole.
- Expand time horizons.
- Expand thought horizons.
- Expand the boundary of caring.
- Celebrate complexity.
- Hold fast to the goal of goodness.
In 1995, Herman Daly and Meadows defined criteria for authentic sustainability, bridging ecological economics with systems science.
