The six-panel working structure that populates the Value Proposition Statement produced by the BioConomy Value Proposition Template. Frames value as retention services tendered by a coordinated BioRegion into markets already structured to purchase them, with substrate health as the mandatory measurement.
Extended definition
The Osterwalder Value Proposition Canvas frames value as gain creators and pain relievers for a customer segment. The BioConomy canvas frames value as retention services a coordinated BioRegion tenders into markets, with substrate health as the mandatory measurement. The two are substantively different.
The Canvas is a working tool. It populates the Value Proposition Statement’s structure. It is not itself one of the three final outputs of the template. Where a coordinator or cohort wishes the Canvas to be a standalone deliverable (for facilitation or communication purposes), it can be produced from the Value Proposition Statement retrospectively.
Where Osterwalder elements prove useful in specific BioHub contexts, they can be integrated inside Panel 4 (Counterparty Portfolio) without disrupting the overall structure. The BioConomy canvas is not derived from the Osterwalder canvas and does not depend on it.
The six panels
- The Living Substrate. What the BioRegion holds: watershed, soil, biodiversity, heritage, human capacity, coordination history. Populated from the BioRegion Atlas.
- The Coordination Layer. What the BioHub holds that no participant holds alone. Stakeholders coordinated, commitments verified, pools operated, contracts held. Populated from the Founding Compact and BioRegion Charter.
- The Tenderable Services Portfolio. Six service categories: water yield, carbon sequestration, biodiversity data, heritage and tourism, food systems, and coordination-as-employment.
- The Counterparty Portfolio (external face). Metropolitan utilities, corporate ESG buyers, philanthropic patrons via transvestment, tourism markets, food supply chains, research institutions.
- The Participant Portfolio (internal face). Landowners, farmers, custodial knowledge-holders, service providers, cooperative members, employees. What each contributes, what each receives, how gainful employment is generated for those who want it.
- The Retention Guarantee. How each service is designed so value circulates within the BioRegion, substrate function increases, and coordination-form capture is prevented (the Market colonizing the Emergent).
Contrast with adjacent tools
The Osterwalder Value Proposition Canvas focuses on one customer segment at a time and asks what jobs, pains, and gains the offer addresses. The BioConomy Value Proposition Canvas frames the offer as a portfolio of retention services with distinct counterparties and distinct participants, held together by a Retention Guarantee.
The Business Model Canvas describes revenue, cost, and channel structure. The BioConomy Value Proposition Canvas describes what the BioHub tenders and to whom. Business-model questions follow from the Canvas as downstream operational work.
