United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (2020). The Great Green Wall: Implementation status and way ahead to 2030. Bonn: UNCCD. Launched 7 September 2020.
The report assessed the African Union’s Great Green Wall against its target of restoring 100 million hectares across the Sahel by 2030. As reported by the UN’s Africa Renewal, it found about 4 percent of the intervention zone restored, with a larger total once restoration elsewhere in the participating countries was counted; over 350,000 jobs and about USD 90 million in revenues from 2007 to 2018; and a need for 8.2 million hectares a year at about USD 4.3 billion a year to reach the target. It names financing, governance and monitoring as obstacles. The wiki cites it as the reference case for the gap between continental pledges and delivered hectares, and for the cost of running restoration without shared monitoring.
