Tanner, J., Smith, C., Ellery, F. and Hughes, D. (2017). “Determining the hydrological functioning of the endemic Palmiet wetlands in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.” IAHS Scientific Assembly, abstract IAHS2017-322. Related research record: Rhodes University repository.
Preliminary results from the Rhodes University Institute for Water Research project on palmiet (Prionium serratum) wetlands. The wetlands sit on alluvial fans in Table Mountain Group terrain and are fed by subsurface flow, which sustains a larger and longer baseflow. Steep discharge gradients make them prone to collapse. The wiki cites it as the most transferable South African evidence that wetland retention supports dry-season flow in sandstone catchments.
