Reed, J., van Vianen, J., Barlow, J., & Sunderland, T. (2017). Have integrated landscape approaches reconciled societal and environmental issues in the tropics? Land Use Policy, 63, 481-492.

The authors reviewed the implementation of landscape approaches across the tropics and did not find a single applied example in the scientific literature that demonstrated, with reliable and in-depth data, the effective balancing of social and environmental trade-offs. Their assessment of 150 grey-literature cases and 24 peer-reviewed studies shows potential gains in social capital, income, employment and resource conservation, and associates multi-level or polycentric governance with success. They conclude that the approaches remain nascent in concept and practice. The wiki cites it as the benchmark for honest claims about integrated landscape management outcomes, and as a reason for BioHubs to build verification into their services from the start.
