Nixon, R. (2011). Slow Violence and the Environmentalism of the Poor. Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press.
Nixon defines slow violence as “a violence that occurs gradually and out of sight, a violence of delayed destruction that is dispersed across time and space, an attritional violence that is typically not viewed as violence at all” (p. 2). His cases are environmental harms such as toxic drift, oil extraction and the aftermath of war, and the writers and movements of the poor who make them visible. The title takes up the “environmentalism of the poor” of Ramachandra Guha and Joan Martínez-Alier. The wiki uses the book as a test case for the violence frame: slow violence fits harms that accumulate in bodies and places, and fits a withheld payment poorly.
