Nattrass, N., and Seekings, J. (2010, July). The Economy and Poverty in the Twentieth Century in South Africa. CSSR Working Paper No. 276. Cape Town: Centre for Social Science Research, University of Cape Town.

Nattrass and Seekings survey the economy from the mineral discoveries through apartheid and into democracy, with attention to who gained from growth. Drawing on Charles Feinstein’s comparison of thirty countries, they report that the comparison group’s growth of GDP per person over 1950 to 1973 “was almost double South Africa’s,” about 4 percent a year against 2.2 percent. The wiki uses that comparison in South Africa on the Curve to set the apartheid-era climb beside other economies. It is a working paper.
