Korsgaard, M. T., Hilt, L., Wiberg, M. and Solberg, M. (2024). “Bildung and the significance of place: an overview.” Journal of Philosophy of Education, 58(5), 599-605. DOI: 10.1093/jopedu/qhae072.

The editors’ introduction to a special issue argues that human beings are placed beings, shaped by where they grow up, and that the movement between the familiar and the unknown lies at the heart of Bildung. Drawing on Heller, Heidegger, Gadamer, Herder, Tuan, Casey, Watsuji and Løvlie, they hold that places are made meaningful through language, morality and aesthetics, and that attachment to place is ambivalent: it offers belonging and can harden into nostalgic nationalism. They call for theories of Bildung that engage Indigenous storied landscapes. The article does not discuss ecology or bioregions. The wiki takes from it the grounding of Bildung in place, and builds its own bridge to the bioregion as a frame of belonging defined by watershed and soil.
