The paper in which Heylighen lifted stigmergy out of its entomological setting and set it out as a general theory of self-organized coordination across biological, cognitive, and social systems. Heylighen defined the mechanism by its components (agents, actions, environment, marks, conditions for response), distinguished quantitative from qualitative variants, and showed how the same pattern that builds a termite mound underwrites Wikipedia, open-source software, scientific collaboration, and market price signals.
Heylighen’s second paper in the same volume (Stigmergy as a universal coordination mechanism II: Varieties and evolution) extends the taxonomy. The two together are the standard reference for the human-coordination extension of Grassé’s original term and the theoretical anchor for treating instruments like the BioScore and the Tenderable Services Portfolio as stigmergic signals.
