Bremer, L.L., Auerbach, D.A., Goldstein, J.H., et al. (2016). “One size does not fit all: Natural infrastructure investments within the Latin American Water Funds Partnership.” Ecosystem Services 17: 217–236.

A comparative study of 16 water funds in the Latin American Water Funds Partnership, the network The Nature Conservancy and partners built to channel downstream water payments into upstream watershed conservation. The authors find wide variation in what the funds aim at, how they raise money and what they pay for. They report that “all water funds worked extensively with local land stewards,” and that rural land stewards were “represented on governance boards in just 4 of 16 funds.” The wiki takes the second finding as the only systematic count of governance exclusion in water funds, and the first as the reason to keep exclusion from the board separate from exclusion from the work.
