American anthropologist and archaeologist, currently at Utah State University, and the leading contemporary theorist of societal collapse as a rational response to declining marginal returns on sociopolitical complexity. His The Collapse of Complex Societies (1988) develops the argument across cases from the Western Roman Empire, the Classic Maya, and the Chacoan cultures.
Tainter’s core mechanism is that societies solve easy problems first. Each added increment of sociopolitical complexity yields declining marginal returns while costing more energy to sustain. Once marginal returns turn negative, collapse becomes, in his own phrase, a mathematical likelihood requiring only time. His own energy accounting bears the argument out: each inflation-adjusted dollar invested in United States energy production yielded roughly 2,250,000 BTUs in 1960 but only 1,845,000 BTUs by 1976. Patents per scientist have declined through the twentieth century.
Tainter belongs on this list because the diminishing-returns-to-complexity argument provides a mechanism by which the industrial S-curve must eventually decelerate even without exogenous ecological constraint. Where Richardson documents the ecological ceiling and Brockway et al. document the energy-return floor, Tainter documents the internal organizational logic by which a complex system runs into its own limits. His framework is one of the key non-ecological arguments for taking the deceleration reading seriously.
