Military officer and pan-African revolutionary, president of Burkina Faso from August 1983 until his assassination in October 1987. Sankara renamed the country “Land of Upright People” and pursued an integrated program of land nationalization and redistribution, mass vaccination (2.5 million children vaccinated against meningitis, yellow fever, and measles), a nationwide literacy campaign, road and rail construction, rejection of IMF and World Bank structural adjustment, and continent-wide debt repudiation. His speech to the Organisation of African Unity in Addis Ababa in July 1987 laid out the debt-repudiation case in full. He modeled austerity in government, selling the ministerial Mercedes fleet for Renault 5s and taking a modest official salary.
Cereal production reportedly doubled from about 800,000 tons in 1983 to 1,700,000 tons in 1987. Burkina Faso achieved food self-sufficiency during his presidency. GNP is reported to have grown at about 4.6 percent per annum in 1985 to 1986 (this specific figure comes from Sankara-network sources and should be treated as Academic Inference pending national-accounts verification). Over 10 million trees were planted for anti-desertification, and the ecological framing of that program is one of the historical retention tradition’s earliest overlaps with an ecological logic.
Sankara was assassinated on 15 October 1987 in a coup led by his former ally Blaise Compaoré, who then ruled Burkina Faso for the next 27 years. On 6 April 2022 a Burkinabè military tribunal in Ouagadougou convicted Compaoré (in absentia), his security chief Hyacinthe Kafando (in absentia), and General Gilbert Diendéré of complicity in the assassination and undermining state security, sentencing all three to life imprisonment; eight others received 3 to 20 year terms and three were acquitted. Sankara belongs on this list because his program comes closest, among the twentieth-century retention figures, to a regenerative framing. His anti-desertification tree-planting and food-sovereignty work add an ecological dimension that Hamilton, Carey, and List did not have. What he did not yet possess was a bioregional scale or a commons-governance theory.
