Czech theologian, philosopher and educator (1592-1670), the last bishop of the original Unity of the Brethren (Unitas Fratrum), who argued for universal education regardless of sex or social standing [IC]. He is widely called the father of modern education.
Contribution
Comenius held that learning is as natural as breathing, so education is part of nature’s own formative process and a healthy society makes it the axis on which it turns. His Didactica Magna set out universal schooling and teaching through the senses and real-world content; Orbis Pictus (1658) was among the first illustrated schoolbooks for children. Jonathan Rowson names him as the most likely single intellectual forebear of Bildung, and records the story that he declined an offer to lead Harvard College [TBV]. The wiki’s research brief The Comenius-to-Schmidt Chain follows his pedagogy through the Moravian Church to the artisan-missionary model.
